Social Bookmarking has been fantastic, and to me I really like it almost more than anything else we do. I say this because it seems to me that indexing robots are constantly indexing the bookmarking sites to find the most recent and freshest content. If you have been looking into search engine optimzation, then I am certain you have read time and time again that Google and every other major search engine that indexes the internet is hungry for fresh and useful content. Well, if you analyze this real quickly. Fresh equals new and useful would be that content that has been linked to because it is so useful. Social Bookmarking accomplishes both of these objectives for search engines. The bookmark points out new content and it is also a link to the location of that content.

When we bookmark the content we have most recently published it is usually indexed within a day of bookmarking it! So if you were questioning the power of bookmarking your posts with Digg, Delicious or any one of the other social bookmarking sites, now you know exactly why so many search engine optimization professionals are utilizing this service!

I definitely have seen the benefits of bookmarking blog posts. I also sometimes bookmark individual forum posts. While this is tedious, I do it in an effort to make my work payoff as quickly as possible. Do you think this is overkill?

As a novice to SEO, I have not used social bookmarking... are there any other uses to it other than getting indexed quickly? We don't update our website that often so how could I use social bookmarking to help me on Google?

There are a few reasons you want to add your sites pages, blog posts etc to social bookmarking sites.

1.) You can drive traffic to your submitted pages because many people search through submitted sites for updates on news or to gather information.

2.) You will be able to get your site indexed very quickly. This is very important when you make changes to pages or add content to your sites. Google is interested in sites that are constantly changing or improving. Another benefit to getting indexed quickly is if you add blog posts with links promoting your other sites, you will get credit for the backlinks within 24 hours like @Cade was saying.

3.)Create attention or to promote event or business. Like I had said before, many people are on social bookmarking sites and the content submitted gets read frequently. With people paying attention to submitted sites its a great way to promote!

It allows members to bookmark or vote for their favorite content. They can add friends to their own network, and whenever they add a new bookmark, their friends get to know about it. They may then give it the thumbs up or the thumbs down if they want to. Content that gets the most number of positive votes are give a lot more exposure by the social bookmarking sites. This leads to more traffic for the content site.
