Web Design HelpWith the number of people using the internet and search on Google, Yahoo and Bing your website could be one of your biggest marketing tools for your business. As someone who helps business owners improve the way they use the web to help grow their business I often come across similar mistakes no matter what industry or what size the business. We are all so wrapped up in our own business and industry it often hinders us to be objective when it comes to our own marketing.

As a business owner there are four big question you should be asking yourself about your website - (1.) What is the actual purpose of my website? (2.) How are people finding my website? (3.) Is my website producing any leads for my company? (4.) Is my website designed appropriately for my appropriate target market? By asking yourself these questions it will force you to start thinking about your website in a different way then you probably did when you had it built. Lets take a look at why these questions are important:

(1.) What is the actual purpose of my website? There are a few different reasons for people to have a website, why do you have yours? Often times when you think about this more questions come up: Is it for people to get more information about your company and services? Did you create your website just to say you had one? Does your website have any helpful tools for customers? Did you create your website to help drive new business? Once you figure out the purpose of your website you can start to focus on how to use it.

(2.) How are people finding my website? It is important to ask this questions so you have a better idea why people are coming to your website. I always tell business owners to install some kind of analytics on their site so they can tell what kind of traffic they are getting and how they are getting there.

Do most of your visitors type in your business name or domain to get there? If this is the case you know they already know about your business from a previous relationship or other marketing you have done. Most of these visitors will not be new customers.

Are your visitors finding you through the search engines? This is a great way to get in front of potential clients and those who do not know about your company. Usually visitors that find you through Google with some

(3.) Is my website producing any leads for my company? If you are not getting calls or emails from your website you might want to consider a new design with a better call to action. I recommend using a tracking number on your website so you can get a good idea of how many calls are generated by your website. Often times we think our website is great but if it is not producing leads you need to invest in someone helping you improve your site's call to action.

(4.) Is my website designed appropriately for my target market? More times than not I will sit down with a company for a consultation and they either want us to develop a website or they already had one designed that is not anywhere close to what their audience is looking for. A huge mistake is designing a site that does not meet the needs for your visitors. I laugh everytime I hear someone say "we want our website to be edgy and cool". What does that mean exactly?

Lets say you have a roofing company and you need to design a website. A huge mistake would be to have a ton of flash, confusing navigation and menu and no content. The target market of a roofing company is people who own homes. This is usually older adults not someone in their lower 20's who would be attracted to flash and a tricky website. A roofing company would want a website with easy navigation, many pictures, pages of content for those who want to read as well as a contact form very easy to find.
